Casting Agent / Director

A casting agent is in charge of recruiting and selecting candidates for film, television, video or media productions. They may also remain as a liaison between directors, actors and their agents. A specialized casting staff is required when selecting candidates for major projects, where hundreds of parts need to be filled, and possibly hundreds or thousands of film extras may need to be hired.

Talent / Booking Agents

A Booking Agent finds actors, actresses; models and entertainers work in the various entities of the film, television, media and video industry. They take a percentage of the money that is paid to the client. The commission is 10 to 20% of the gross amount depending on whether the job is a union job. Some agents specialize in a specific area, while some handle all types of assignments. The agent has two types of clients: The buyer and the talent. The buyer may be a production company, or casting director. The agent usually submits a photo / head shot or portfolio to the buyer, based on the sex, look, age, talent or race that the client is looking for. If the buyer decides to use the talent, they will then contact the agent to negotiate the contract or pay, as well as all other details concerning the assignment.  The talent agencies that dominate the industry are: Affinity Models & Talent Agency, Creative Artists Agency, Fame Agency, IMG Artists, Innovative Artists, Look Talent, Stars Agency, United Talent Agency, William Morris Endeavor Entertainment, International Creative Management

Talent / Artist Management

A talent manager’s job is to oversee the daily affairs of their client. They advise and council their client on career plans and business decisions, as well as establish connections with various people in the industry, such as producers and studios. A talent manager does not have the ability to negotiate contracts. A tentative agreement with an agent that can be renegotiated after three to six months is recommended. Commissions can vary but 10% of gross to 20% of net pay. The less developed the artist is, and the more developed a manager is; the higher the commission.

Publicist

A publicist is someone that is hired to manage and generate publicity for their clients. Publicists generate press coverage for their client and serves as a link between the client, the public and the media. Most publicists handle multiple clients and are usually paid a monthly fee for their services. Some publicists specialize in specific areas of expertise.

The Screen Actors Guild
The Screen Actors Guild is an American labor union; established in 1933, to enhance the working conditions of actors and actresses. SAG has a membership of nearly 120,000 principal performers who work in motion pictures, television, commercials, industrials, video games, Internet and all new media formats. SAG is a unified voice on behalf of artists’ rights, compensations and benefits.

In order to obtain a SAG card, and become a member of the Screen Actors Guild; a performer must show proof of employment from a principal or speaking role in a union film, television program, video or commercial. Documentation in the form of a signed contract or pay stub, submitted with a SAG application is required. Extras may join by showing proof of employment as a SAG-covered background player at full SAG rates and conditions for a minimum of three workdays.  Three extra/background vouchers are required and must be submitted along with a SAG application.
Performers may also join SAG if the applicant is a paid-up member of an affiliated performers' union (ACTRA, AEA, AFTRA, AGMA or AGVA) for a period of one year and has worked and been paid for at least once as a principal performer in that union’s jurisdiction.
