Film & Celebrity News, Movie Reviews & Previews
The impact of reviews on a film's box office performance and DVD rentals/sales is a matter of debate. Some claim movie marketing is so intense and well financed that reviewers cannot make an impact against it. Websites such as, Rotten Tomatoes seek to improve the usefulness of film reviews by compiling them and assigning a score to each in order to gauge the general reception a film receives. The Internet Movie Database (IMDB) website consists of one of the largest accumulations of data about films, television programs, and direct-to-video products. IMDB also has a rating system to gauge a films success and popularity. Some note, positive film reviews have been shown to spark interest in little-known films. However, the failure of some heavily promoted movies that were harshly reviewed, as well as the unexpected success of critically praised independent movies indicates that extreme critical reactions can have considerable influence.
Box Office Mojo is an online movie publication and box office reporting service. The site creates an overall weekend chart, combining all box office returns from around the world, excluding the United States and Canada. The overall weekend chart currently tracks the Top 40 films as well as about fifty additional films with no ranking.
